Test for the in vitro quantitative determination of proenkephalin A (surrogate marker for the unstable enkephalin peptide hormone). Acute renal failure is a common representative of the clinical pictures in the intensive care unit. The estimation of the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) based on other metabolites such as creatinine brings with it a significant delay that should be viewed as highly critical in intensive care medicine. A significant increase in enkephalin concentration can be detected up to 48 hours earlier, correlates with current GFR and provides real-time information on kidney function at the point-of-care.
