The point of the introducing needle is carefully cut and honed to an ultra-sharp triple bevel that minimizes patient discomfort and tissue trauma. The gently tapered catheter tip aligns with the needle bevel to provide smooth transition from needle to catheter during insertion.
Additionally the production of Surflo® IV Catheter is computer-controlled to maintain a constant, minimum distance from needle heel to catheter tip. This permits a smooth insertion even into small vessels while reducing the risks of penetrating the posterior wall of the vein.
The catheter is made of Ethylene tetrafluorethylene (ETFE), a material known for its flexible strenght and high biocompatibility. Because ETFE is stronger, compared to other materials, there is less likehood of split tips and peelback. The radioopaque layer in the catheter is encapsulated by inner and outer layers of ETFE. This construction permits maximum radio-opacity while providing easier insertion and better flow-rate characteristics.
Each Surflo® IV catheter is individually packed in a sterile, easy-to-open plastic case. This rigid plastic case provides added protection to both the catheter and the user. The case is colour-coded for easy identification of the catheter gauge and has a tamperevident seal for additional safety.
The TERUMO® logo located on the upper surface of the flashback chamber serves as a needle bevel indicator. This permits precise bevel alignment even after venipuncture has been initiated. The flashback chamber is fully transparent for immediate confirmation of venipuncture. The incorporated hydrophobic membrane filter allows air to vent easily with virtually no resistance, which results in a rapid blood return even in the smaller gauge sizes.
A luer-lock obturator is available for most catheter gauges. This obturator efficiently prevents thrombous formation in the lumen of the catheter when the infusion is interrupted. The obturator is colour-coded in accordance with the catheter to avoid confusion.
